About Ross

Ross Ainslie, born in Perthshire in 1983, is widely regarded as one of Scotland’s most accomplished traditional musicians and composers. Mastering the pipes, whistles, and cittern, Ross’s musical journey began with the Perth and District Pipe Band before he joined the Vale of Atholl Pipe Band, where he was deeply influenced by the innovative piper Gordon Duncan. This mentorship inspired Ross to explore his own creative voice, leading him to develop a distinctive style that blends tradition with innovation. In 2002, he became a finalist in the BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year competition, marking the beginning of his rise as a prominent figure in the Scottish folk scene.

Ross is celebrated not only for his highly acclaimed solo work but also for his dynamic collaborations with various artists and bands. He regularly performs with groups such as Treacherous Orchestra, Salsa Celtica, Dougie Maclean, Ali Hutton, Jarlath Henderson, Charlie McKerron, Tim Edey, Hamish Napier, Brighde Chaimbeul, Duncan Chisholm, and India Alba. Additionally, he has shared the stage with internationally renowned musicians like Kate Rusby, Blue Rose Code, Zakir Hussain, Trilok Gurtu, Capercaillie, Shooglenifty, Carl Barat, Papon, Karsh Kale, Flook, Breabach, Soumik Datta, and Patsy Reid. His collaborations are marked by a seamless fusion of Scottish folk traditions with global influences, creating a vibrant and unique sound that resonates with audiences worldwide.

Known for his versatility and technical prowess, Ross continues to push the boundaries of traditional music, bringing a fresh perspective to the genre. His work, both solo and collaborative, is characterized by a deep respect for the roots of Scottish music while embracing contemporary elements, making him a sought-after artist on the international stage. Ross Ainslie remains a driving force in the evolution of Scottish folk music, continually inspiring listeners and fellow musicians with his innovative compositions and spirited performances.
