Shetland's fiddle tradition goes back to the early 1700s, and it sounds like nowhere else. The islands belonged to Norway until the mid-1400s, and you can still hear it: bridal marches and wedding tunes, open strings left ringing, and fiddles retuned for more resonance, much like the Hardanger fiddle across the sea. Kevin Henderson grew up in this tradition and learned from Willie Hunter, regarded by many as the finest fiddler Shetland has produced. In this course he teaches reels, airs, bridal marches and more from different parts of the islands, and shows you what sheet music can't: the bowing, the ringing strings, and the feel that makes a tune sound like Shetland.

About the Fiddle
The fiddle, also known as the violin, has a long and rich history that can be traced back to the 16th century in Italy. The instrument was originally designed to be played in orchestras and other classical music settings. However, it soon became popular in folk music traditions around the world, including in regions such as Ireland, Scotland, the Nordic countries, and the Appalachian Mountains in the United States.
